Quick picks

What Irish gardens actually need

An Irish garden asks different things of its tools than the glossy spec sheets assume. Grass grows fast in a mild, wet spring and is rarely properly dry when you get a window to cut it. Patios, decking and north-facing paths go green and slippery with algae and moss over the winter. And because the mowing season is effectively a short burst from spring to early autumn, many people would rather buy a tool that stores small and starts every time than one with the most power.

Below are two catalog picks that cover the jobs most suburban gardens need, followed by cordless alternatives for mowing, hedges and leaves, a comparison table, and practical advice on wet grass, patio cleaning and outdoor electrical safety.

Our picks

Kärcher K4 Power Control High Pressure Washer 1800W with Home Kit & T 5 Patio Cleaner
Best for patios and driveways

Kärcher K4 Power Control High Pressure Washer 1800W with Home Kit & T 5 Patio Cleaner

Best for: Patios, driveways, decking and cars in a typical suburban garden

The Kärcher K4 Power Control pairs a water-cooled 1800 W motor with up to 130 bar and a gun that shows which pressure setting you are on. The bundled T 5 surface cleaner is the reason to buy this kit: a hooded rotating head that lifts algae and grime off paving and decking without blasting dirty water up the walls and windows. For a semi-d with a patio, a driveway and a car, the K4 is the size we would choose; smaller K2-class machines are lighter but slower on large areas.

Pros

  • T 5 patio cleaner reduces splash-back on paving and decking
  • Water-cooled motor is designed for longer sessions than entry-level air-cooled models
  • Pressure display on the gun makes it easier to use a gentler setting on softwood and render
  • Plug-and-clean detergent bottles swap without spills

Cons

  • Heavier and bulkier than entry-level pressure washers
  • Needs an outdoor tap and a mains socket, ideally RCD-protected
  • High pressure can erode soft sandstone, mortar joints and old timber if you are careless
Flymo EasiStore 300R 1000W Electric Rotary Lawn Mower with Rear Roller & Vertical Storage
Best mower for small lawns

Flymo EasiStore 300R 1000W Electric Rotary Lawn Mower with Rear Roller & Vertical Storage

Best for: Small, level lawns where storage space is tight

The Flymo EasiStore 300R is a 1000 W corded rotary mower with a 30cm cutting width, five cutting heights from 20mm to 60mm, a 30-litre collection box and a rear roller for a striped finish. Its main trick is storage: the handles fold so it stands upright against a wall, which matters if your mower lives in a side passage or a crowded shed. It suits small, mostly level lawns; on larger or awkwardly shaped gardens the narrow cut and the cable become a chore.

Pros

  • Folds to stand vertically, taking very little floor space
  • Rear roller helps along lawn edges and leaves stripes
  • Corded power means no batteries to charge or replace
  • Light enough to carry over steps

Cons

  • 30cm cut width is slow on lawns much beyond a small suburban garden
  • The cable needs managing and an RCD for safety
  • A 30-litre box fills quickly when the grass is long and wet

Buying advice for Irish gardens

Corded or cordless? Corded tools are cheaper, lighter for their power and never run flat, which suits small lawns close to the house. Cordless tools cost more but are far more pleasant on bigger or awkward gardens and remove the trip-and-cut risk of a cable. The real decision is the battery platform: pick one brand and voltage and buy bare tools afterwards, because batteries are the expensive part. A single 18 V battery is fine for a small lawn; larger lawns need either a bigger battery or two.

Mowing wet grass. In Ireland you will often cut grass that is not fully dry. Raise the cutting height, go slower, empty the box more often and clean the underside of the deck after each cut, because wet clippings clog collection chutes and reduce suction. Avoid mowing waterlogged lawns altogether: you will tear the grass and compact the soil. Never use a corded mower in rain, and always mow away from the cable.

Cutting height and season. Grass growth slows dramatically in winter and picks up in spring, so the bulk of mowing happens over a few months. Start the season with the deck on a high setting for the first couple of cuts, then lower gradually. Leaving grass a little longer through dry spells and in shaded, mossy areas helps it compete with moss.

Algae and moss on patios. A pressure washer with a surface-cleaner attachment removes the green film quickly, but it will come back if the area stays damp and shaded. Sweep regularly, clear debris from joints and consider a suitable patio cleaner afterwards. Use a lower pressure and keep the nozzle moving on softwood decking, render and soft stone such as some sandstone, and avoid aiming straight at pointed joints. Wear grippy footwear: wet, freshly cleaned paving is slippery.

Hedges and leaves. For hedges up to about shoulder height, a light cordless trimmer is easier to control than a heavy petrol model. Section 40 of the Wildlife Act restricts cutting vegetation in hedges and ditches from 1 March to 31 August; the National Parks & Wildlife Service notes that trimming garden hedges in the ordinary course of gardening is exempt, but check for nesting birds before you start. A leaf blower is handy in autumn for paths and patios, but a rake and a garden vac or mower with a collector often does as good a job on lawns.

Winter storage. Before the first frost, run a pressure washer briefly without water connected (or follow the manual's frost-protection steps) to clear the pump, and store it in a frost-free shed or garage. Clean and dry mower decks, store batteries indoors at room temperature and part-charged, and hang hedge-trimmer blades with a light coat of oil. Frequently asked questions

Can I mow wet grass with an electric mower?

It is best to wait until the grass is at least surface-dry, and never mow in rain with a corded mower. If you must cut damp grass, raise the cutting height, move slowly, empty the box often and clean the deck afterwards. Always use an RCD-protected socket and keep the cable behind you. Avoid waterlogged lawns entirely, as mowing them damages the grass and compacts the soil.

What pressure washer do I need for a patio?

For a typical suburban patio or driveway, a mid-range machine around the K4 class with a rotating surface-cleaner attachment is a good balance. The surface cleaner matters more than raw pressure because it cleans evenly and limits splash-back. Smaller entry-level machines can do the job but take longer on large areas.

Do I need an RCD for garden tools in Ireland?

You should always use one. An RCD cuts the power very quickly if current leaks to earth, for example when a mower runs over its cable or a lead gets wet. Many modern fuse boards include RCD protection, but if you are unsure, use a plug-in RCD adaptor at the socket. Test it regularly with the test button.

Is a cordless lawn mower worth it for a small garden?

For a small, level lawn near a socket, a corded mower is cheaper and perfectly adequate. Cordless makes more sense if the lawn is awkward to reach with a cable, has lots of obstacles, or if you already own batteries from the same tool range. Check that one battery will cover your lawn, and whether the battery and charger are included.

When can I cut hedges in Ireland?

Section 40 of the Wildlife Act restricts cutting vegetation in hedges and ditches between 1 March and 31 August to protect nesting birds. According to the National Parks & Wildlife Service, summer trimming of hedges in the ordinary course of gardening is exempt, but it is still good practice to check for active nests first and to save heavy cutting for autumn and winter.
