How the charges add up
- UK VAT comes off. Exports from the UK shouldn't carry 20% UK VAT, so we start from the ex-VAT price.
- Irish VAT goes on. 23% on the goods, shipping and any duty, on parcels of any value.
- Customs duty applies above €150, unless the goods were made in the UK.
- The EU low-value parcel charge (€3 per item type, plus VAT) applies to parcels of €150 or less since July 2026.
- A handling fee is added by An Post or the courier if charges weren't paid at checkout.
Items sold and dispatched by Amazon.ie skip all of this because they never cross the EU border. Read Does Amazon charge customs in Ireland? for worked examples.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay customs on Amazon.co.uk orders to Ireland?
You pay 23% Irish VAT on almost everything shipped from the UK, whatever its value. Customs duty only applies to goods worth more than €150 that were not made in the UK. Amazon.co.uk usually collects these up front as an Import Fees Deposit. See our full customs guide.
What is the €3 EU parcel charge?
Since 1 July 2026 the EU charges €3 per item type on parcels worth €150 or less coming from outside the EU, including the UK. VAT is charged on top, so it works out at about €3.69. It replaced the old duty exemption for low-value parcels.
Why does the calculator add an An Post fee?
When import charges are not paid at checkout, An Post (or the courier) collects them before delivery and adds a handling fee — reported at €6.95 per parcel at the time of writing. If the seller collected the charges at checkout you may not pay this fee.
How accurate is this calculator?
It is an estimate. It uses a fixed £1 ≈ €1.18 exchange rate, a typical €12 UK courier fee and average duty rates by category. Actual duty depends on the product’s customs code and origin. Use it to compare options, not as a quote.
How do I avoid customs charges altogether?
Buy items that are sold and dispatched by Amazon.ie or another seller shipping from inside the EU. Our guide on how to find Amazon.ie stock shows how to filter Amazon search results to Irish stock only.
