How Amazon.ie Returns Work: A Guide for Irish Shoppers

Most Amazon.ie items can be returned within 30 days. Here is how to start a return, where to drop it off, what it costs, when the refund arrives, and how your legal rights differ for faulty items and change-of-mind returns.

The short answer

Most items bought on Amazon.ie can be returned within 30 days of delivery, whether sold by Amazon or a third-party seller. You start the return in Your Orders, pick a reason and a return method, then drop the parcel off, which for most Irish addresses means an An Post label and a trip to the post office. Faulty items go back free; change-of-mind returns may have a flat fee taken off the refund. For items shipped by Amazon, Amazon.ie says it issues refunds within a maximum of 14 days, and the money can take up to 7 more business days to reach your account.

Underneath Amazon's policies sit your legal rights under Irish and EU law, which last far longer than 30 days for faulty goods.

How to start a return, step by step

  1. Sign in to Amazon.ie, open Your Orders and find the order. For a gift you received, use Return a Gift instead.
  2. Select Return or Replace Items. If it's missing, the item may be outside its window or not returnable; the order details usually say why.
  3. Choose the item and an accurate reason, because the reason affects whether the return is free.
  4. Choose a refund or replacement where offered, then a return method. The options depend on the item, the seller and your address.
  5. For a third-party seller who handles their own returns, you'll see Submit return request; the seller replies with instructions.
  6. Print the label if one is provided, pack the item with all its accessories and manuals, and attach the label to the outside.
  7. Drop it off by the date given, keep your proof of postage, and track it under View Return/Refund Status.

Where to drop off a return in Ireland

Amazon's five-year agreement with An Post, announced in 2023, covers returns as well as deliveries in Ireland, and launch reports describe Amazon.ie returns as a label you print and take to an An Post office.

  • Post offices are the standard drop-off. An Post's network has more than 900 post offices, PostPoints and parcel lockers, but whether a PostPoint or locker takes your Amazon return depends on the label and instructions Amazon issues.
  • No printer, no locker? At the time of writing we could not confirm label-free QR-code drop-off, Amazon Lockers or Amazon counters for Amazon.ie returns in the Republic, although all three exist in the UK. If one appears as an option in your return, use it; otherwise print the label at a library or print shop.
  • Returns going abroad, such as to a seller outside Ireland, may need you to arrange postage. Amazon.ie's self-ship guidance suggests a carrier such as An Post, DHL or UPS.

How long you have

Amazon.ie's returns policy says Amazon and Marketplace sellers accept returns of most items within 30 days of receipt. That is voluntary, more generous than the 14-day legal minimum, and Amazon says it does not restrict your statutory rights. Items must come back as you received them: new items new, unused and complete. Exceptions include:

  • Sealed media: CDs, DVDs, games and software only with the shrink-wrap or seal intact.
  • Personalised items and goods unsealed after delivery that can't be returned for health or hygiene reasons, which fall outside the legal cooling-off right, according to the CCPC.
  • Digital content once the download or use has started.
  • Replacements: send the original back by the return-by date or you may be charged for both.

Does it cost anything to return?

  • Faulty, damaged or wrong item: free. The CCPC says the business must cover the cost of taking back faulty goods, and must reimburse you if you paid the postage.
  • Clothing, shoes, handbags, jewellery and watches: Amazon.ie offers free returns on selected items in these departments, whatever their price.
  • Change of mind on other items: where a return isn't free, Amazon.ie deducts a flat amount for return shipping from your refund. A launch-week review on Goosed.ie reported it as €3.99; check Amazon.ie's Return Costs help page for the current figure.
  • Cancelling under the legal 14-day right: the CCPC says you may have to pay the return costs.

When you get your money back

Amazon.ie's refund timelines page says that for products shipped by Amazon, it issues the refund within a maximum of 14 days and confirms it by email, after which it can take up to 7 business days to appear on your statement. Some cases take longer.

  • Instant refunds: some returns qualify for a refund to your card, or as Amazon.ie gift card balance, before the item arrives back. You must then return it within 30 days or the amount is charged back.
  • Third-party sellers refund on their own timescale within the legal limits: under the cooling-off rules, within 14 days of being told you are cancelling, although they can wait until they receive the goods.
  • Nothing arrived? Contact Amazon once the processing time has passed.

Faulty items vs change of mind: your legal rights

Your legal rights are what protect you when something goes wrong later. The CCPC and ECC Ireland explain them for online purchases from EU businesses:

Your legal rights on online purchases from EU businesses (at the time of writing)
Change of mindFaulty or not as described
Legal basis14-day cooling-off period for online purchasesConsumer Rights Act 2022: goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described
Time limits14 days from delivery to tell the seller, then 14 more days to send it backFull refund if you reject within 30 days; after that, repair or replacement, then refund or price reduction. EU minimum two years; in Ireland up to six
Return postageUsually youThe business
ProofNo reason neededA fault in the first year is presumed to have been there on delivery

Amazon.ie's conditions of sale say customers in the Republic have a statutory right relating to defective products for six years from delivery and can ask for a repair or replacement. The CCPC adds that six years applies to goods that could reasonably be expected to last that long, so a cheap phone case is not treated like a washing machine. The right is against the seller, and any manufacturer's warranty comes on top of it.

Buying from a business covered by EU consumer law, with returns that stay inside Ireland, is the main reason we only list items sold and dispatched by Amazon.ie.

Third-party sellers vs sold by Amazon

Who handles your return depends on two lines in the buy box and order details: Sold by and Dispatches from.

  • Sold and dispatched by Amazon: Amazon handles everything, from label to refund.
  • Sold by a third party, dispatched by Amazon: you use Amazon's returns process and label, because the item shipped from an Amazon warehouse, but the seller is still the business your contract is with.
  • Sold and dispatched by a third party: you submit a return request and the seller replies. Amazon.ie says that if the seller doesn't respond within 48 hours, you can claim under the A-to-z Guarantee.
  • Private sellers: Amazon's conditions say that where a seller is not a business, statutory rights such as the legal guarantee and 14-day cancellation do not apply, though the A-to-z Guarantee and 30-day policy still do.

Returning an Amazon.co.uk order from Ireland

An Amazon.co.uk order delivered to the Republic goes back as a cross-border parcel. Amazon.co.uk's help page on returns from the Republic of Ireland says, at the time of writing:

  • Sold or dispatched by Amazon.co.uk: most items get a prepaid An Post label, which only An Post accepts. Print the commercial invoice twice, one copy inside the parcel and one outside, and take it to a post office.
  • No prepaid label offered: use another carrier, pay upfront and claim it back for eligible returns, so keep the receipt.
  • Third-party items dispatched by Amazon: you pay the postage and Amazon automatically refunds £9 towards it once the item reaches its warehouse. For higher postage, or items worth more than £20, it advises recorded delivery and emailing the receipt to claim the difference.

The bigger loss is usually the import charges. Revenue says the €3 per-item customs duty is not refunded when you return an item unless the goods are faulty, and that some online suppliers refund the VAT on a return but many do not. Amazon's help pages say an Import Fees Deposit is refunded on items returned as incorrect, damaged or defective; we could not confirm the same for change-of-mind returns.

If a courier collected the charges at your door, An Post says it does not refund VAT or customs charges on goods returned after delivery, and Revenue does not refund individuals directly; for faulty goods, you go to the seller first and then the delivery company that handled customs. Our customs charges guide explains each charge.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to return something to Amazon.ie?

Most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery under Amazon.ie's returns policy, whether sold by Amazon or a Marketplace seller, with restrictions on things like unsealed software and personalised goods. The legal minimum for online purchases is 14 days, and faulty goods are protected for much longer. The return-by date in Your Orders is the one that applies.

Are Amazon.ie returns free?

Returns of faulty, damaged or incorrect items are free, and selected clothing, shoes, handbags, jewellery and watches have free returns. For other change-of-mind returns, Amazon.ie may deduct a flat return shipping amount from your refund. The return flow shows whether a charge applies before you confirm.

How long does an Amazon.ie refund take?

For items shipped by Amazon, Amazon.ie says it issues refunds within a maximum of 14 days and confirms them by email; the money can then take up to 7 business days to show on your statement. Some returns qualify for an instant refund. Third-party sellers refund on their own timescale within the legal limits.

Can I return an Amazon.ie item at the post office?

In most cases, yes. Amazon's returns in Ireland run through An Post, and a typical Amazon.ie return uses a label you print and hand in at a post office. The methods available depend on the item, seller and address, and are shown when you start the return in Your Orders.

What if my Amazon.ie item breaks after 30 days?

You still have rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 you can ask the seller for a repair or replacement, then a refund or price reduction if neither is possible. EU law sets a two-year minimum, and in Ireland you can seek a remedy for up to six years for goods expected to last that long. Keep the order confirmation and photos of the fault.

Do I get customs charges back if I return an Amazon.co.uk order?

Often not. Revenue says the €3 per-item customs duty is not refunded unless the goods are faulty, and many online suppliers do not refund import VAT on returns. Amazon refunds the Import Fees Deposit on items returned as faulty, damaged or incorrect, and An Post does not refund VAT or customs charges it collected.
