The short answer
Amazon Prime on Amazon.ie launched at €6.99 a month or €69.90 a year (check Amazon.ie's Prime page for the current price). It is likely to be worth it if you order from Amazon.ie more than once or twice a month, often want something the next day, or would otherwise pay for a streaming service that Prime Video replaces. It is probably not worth it if you order a handful of times a year and can wait or combine orders to reach the free-delivery threshold. The 30-day free trial is the cheapest way to find out which camp you are in.
What Prime costs in Ireland
Amazon introduced an Irish Prime membership when Amazon.ie launched on 18 March 2025. The prices below are the launch prices; Amazon has raised Prime prices in other European countries over the years, so treat them as correct at the time of writing rather than permanent.
| Plan | Price | Cost over 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | €6.99 per month | €83.88 |
| Annual | €69.90 per year | €69.90 |
| Free trial | 30 days | €0 if cancelled before it renews |
Paying annually costs the same as ten months of the monthly plan, saving €13.98 a year. The monthly plan makes more sense if you only want Prime for a busy period such as the run-up to Christmas or a big event like Prime Day or Black Friday, and plan to cancel afterwards.

What's included
According to Amazon's launch announcement, Irish Prime includes:
- Free delivery on eligible Prime items, including One-Day delivery in many areas.
- Prime Video, Amazon's streaming service for films, series and some live sport.
- Prime Gaming, with free games and in-game content.
- Amazon Photos, with photo storage.
- Prime-only deals and events, including Prime Day.
- Partner offers at launch, such as a year of Deliveroo Plus Silver and Odeon cinema discounts. Partner perks change, so check the Prime page for what is currently offered.
The break-even maths on delivery
Without Prime, Amazon.ie offers free standard delivery on eligible orders above a minimum basket value and charges a delivery fee below it. Both the threshold and the fees change from time to time, so check Amazon.ie's delivery rates page for the current figures. Once you know your typical delivery charge, the sum is simple: €69.90 divided by the delivery fee you would otherwise pay gives the number of paid deliveries a year at which Prime pays for itself on delivery alone.
| Delivery fee you would otherwise pay | Orders per year to break even | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| €3 | 24 | Two orders a month |
| €4 | 18 | One and a half orders a month |
| €5 | 14 | Just over one order a month |
| €7 | 10 | Ten orders a year |
Two things push the maths in Prime's favour. First, faster delivery has a value of its own if you would otherwise drive to a shop or pay a premium elsewhere. Second, Prime removes the temptation to pad a basket with things you do not need just to reach the free-delivery threshold. Two things push it the other way: many orders are naturally above the threshold anyway, and patient shoppers can batch orders.
Counting Prime Video
If you would watch Prime Video regularly, it changes the picture. A household that would otherwise pay for one streaming subscription can treat a large part of the Prime fee as its entertainment budget and get delivery as a bonus. If you already have Netflix, Disney+ and others and rarely open Prime Video, give it no value in your calculation.
A practical test: during the free trial, keep a note of every Prime delivery and every evening you watch Prime Video. At the end of 30 days, multiply by twelve and compare it to €69.90.
Who Prime suits — and who it does not
- Probably worth it: households ordering from Amazon.ie a couple of times a month or more; people who regularly need things quickly (parents, home workers, rural households far from shops); regular Prime Video viewers.
- Borderline: people who order about once a month and do not use Prime Video. Try the monthly plan around busy periods instead of committing for a year.
- Probably not worth it: occasional shoppers whose orders are usually above the free-delivery threshold anyway, and people who are happy to wait and combine orders.
Free trial, students and switching from UK Prime
- Free trial. New members can usually try Irish Prime free for 30 days. It renews automatically into a paid plan unless you turn off auto-renewal in your account before the trial ends.
- Students. Amazon runs a discounted Prime Student plan in some countries, including the UK. At the time of writing we could not confirm a Prime Student offer on Amazon.ie, so check the Prime page rather than assuming one exists; UK student offers are designed for UK accounts.
- Switching from UK Prime. When Amazon.ie launched, Amazon said customers in Ireland could move from UK Prime to Irish Prime, with the UK membership cancelled and refunded. UK Prime delivery perks are aimed at UK addresses, so if you live in the Republic, Irish Prime is the one to have.
- Cancelling. You can cancel from the Prime section of your account. Amazon's terms set out when unused paid membership is refunded.
Getting free delivery without Prime
- Combine purchases into one basket above the free-delivery threshold.
- Keep a running wishlist and order once a month instead of as you think of things.
- Take out the monthly plan only around big sales or Christmas, then cancel.
Whichever you choose, Prime does not change what you pay for the item itself or remove import charges from non-EU sellers. Stick to items sold and dispatched by Amazon.ie — here is why.
