Choosing noise-cancelling headphones
Active noise cancellation (ANC) is most effective against steady, low-pitched sound: a bus engine, the hum of a train, aircraft cabin drone, the air handling in an open-plan office. It is much less effective against sudden or high-pitched noise such as voices, announcements or brakes squealing, which is why fit and passive isolation still matter. This guide covers three noise-cancelling models that are sold and dispatched by Amazon.ie, two over-ears and one pair of earbuds, plus a portable speaker for when you want to share the sound instead.
The first decision is form factor, not brand. Over-ear headphones generally give longer battery life, a more stable fit for long sessions and bigger drivers, but they are bulky and warm. Earbuds fit in a pocket, cope better with rain and exercise, and are easier to wear under a hat or hood, but have shorter battery life per charge and depend heavily on getting the right ear-tip size. Many people end up owning one of each. If you are torn between the two formats, our AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony WH-1000XM5 comparison covers that choice in detail.
Our picks

Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Over-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones with Auto NC Optimizer
Best for: Commuters and office workers who want one pair of headphones for everything
The WH-1000XM5 remains the most balanced over-ear choice. Sony quotes up to 30 hours of playback with noise cancelling on, its eight-microphone system is consistently strong against engine and train rumble, and at around 250 g it is light enough for a full working day. It supports the LDAC codec for Android users who want higher-bitrate Bluetooth, and a three-minute charge gives a few hours of listening. The main drawback is that the earcups swivel flat but do not fold, so the case is relatively large for a coat pocket or small bag.
Pros
- Up to 30 hours of playback with ANC on (Sony figure)
- Strong, consistent noise cancelling on low-frequency noise
- Light frame and low clamp pressure for long sessions
- LDAC support for compatible Android phones
Cons
- Does not fold, so the carry case takes up more space
- Touch controls on the earcup can be triggered accidentally when adjusting the headband
- Not rated for water resistance, so not ideal for heavy rain

Bose QuietComfort Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones – Up to 24 Hours Battery, Quiet & Aware Modes (Black)
Best for: Frequent flyers and anyone who wears headphones for many hours at a time
This is Bose’s standard QuietComfort Headphones, not the pricier QuietComfort Ultra. Plush earcup cushions and a padded headband are designed for long listening sessions, and comfort is what owners mention most. Noise cancelling is aimed at the deep drone of aircraft and buses, with simple Quiet and Aware modes plus custom modes in the Bose app. The frame folds for travel, multipoint keeps it connected to a phone and laptop, and the included cable with an in-line mic keeps it working when the battery runs flat. The trade-off is battery life: Bose quotes up to 24 hours, less than the Sony. Bose now also sells a 2nd Gen version.
Pros
- Plush cushions and a padded band designed for long sessions
- Simple Quiet and Aware modes, plus custom modes with Wind Block
- Folding frame packs down neatly for travel
- Multipoint, plus a cable with in-line mic for wired use
Cons
- Up to 24 hours of battery, shorter than the Sony (Bose figure)
- SBC and AAC only, with no LDAC or aptX for higher-bitrate Android audio
- No water resistance rating or spatial audio, and a newer 2nd Gen model is on sale

Apple AirPods Pro 3 Wireless Earbuds – Active Noise Cancellation, Heart Rate Sensing & MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C)
Best for: iPhone owners who want ANC in a pocket, especially for walking, cycling and the gym
If you use an iPhone, the AirPods Pro 3 are the easiest noise-cancelling earbuds to live with. Pairing, switching between Apple devices and Find My all work without setup, and Adaptive Audio blends noise cancelling and transparency as surroundings change. Apple says they remove up to twice as much noise as the AirPods Pro 2, with foam-infused ear tips in five sizes, from XXS to L. A heart rate sensor tracks workouts, and the earbuds and USB-C MagSafe case are rated IP57 for dust, sweat and water. Apple quotes up to 8 hours of listening per charge with noise cancelling on, and 24 hours with the case.
Pros
- Seamless pairing and switching across iPhone, iPad and Mac
- Very natural transparency mode for crossings and announcements
- IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance for earbuds and case
- Heart rate sensing for workouts without a watch
Cons
- Up to 8 hours per charge, far less than over-ears
- Many features are limited or unavailable on Android
- Up to 24 hours in total with the case, less than the 30 Apple quoted for the AirPods Pro 2

Sonos Roam 2 Ultra-Portable Waterproof Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Smart Speaker
Best for: Existing Sonos owners and anyone who wants a weatherproof speaker for the garden
Not a pair of headphones, but worth including for people who also want a speaker. The Roam 2 joins a Sonos system over Wi-Fi at home and switches to Bluetooth when you take it outside. It is rated IP67 for dust and water, so a shower in the garden or on the beach will not harm it, and Sonos quotes around 10 hours of playback. It charges over USB-C or on a Qi wireless pad. Its compact size means it cannot fill a large room the way a bigger speaker can.
Pros
- Works over Wi-Fi at home and Bluetooth outdoors
- IP67 dust and water resistance
- Automatic Trueplay tuning adjusts to its surroundings
Cons
- Around 10 hours of battery, modest for a full day out
- Limited bass and volume compared with larger speakers

What to look for
Match the format to your commute. Over-ears suit seated journeys: a DART or Irish Rail commute, a long bus route or a flight, where the steady engine noise is exactly what ANC handles best and you can wear them for an hour or more. If most of your commute is on foot or by bike, earbuds are usually more practical. They sit under a hood, survive a drizzle better, and are easy to take out when you need to hear a Luas bell or a car behind you.
Use transparency mode outdoors. Strong noise cancelling can make traffic surprisingly hard to hear. All three picks have a transparency or aware mode that lets outside sound in; set it as the default for walking and switch to full ANC once you are seated. Cyclists should be especially cautious about listening at all on busy roads.
Wind and calls. Outdoor wind is the main enemy of call quality on any headset, and none of these models completely eliminates it. If you take a lot of calls while walking, earbuds with the microphone close to your mouth tend to cope better than you might expect, but for important calls stepping into a doorway still helps more than any spec sheet.
Rain is the realistic risk. Neither over-ear pick carries a water resistance rating, so treat a heavy shower as something to avoid rather than something they are designed for. Wipe them down and let them dry before putting them back in the case. The AirPods Pro 3 are rated IP57, which covers sweat, rain and splashes, but Apple says they are not designed for swimming or showering.
Phone ecosystem matters more than sound quality. On an iPhone, AirPods give automatic pairing and switching that third-party models cannot match. On Android, Sony’s LDAC support and app are more useful, and Samsung’s Galaxy Buds integrate best with Galaxy phones. If you work from a laptop as well as a phone, check for multipoint so the headphones can stay connected to both.
Fit and maintenance. For earbuds, try every ear-tip size in the box: a poor seal undoes most of the noise cancelling and thins out the bass. Over-ear cushions wear out with daily use, typically after a couple of years, so check that replacement pads are available for the model you buy. Clean the mesh over the microphones occasionally, as blocked mics can weaken both noise cancelling and call quality.
