Our Verdict

Sony requires a heatsink or other cooling on any SSD in the PS5’s expansion slot, but plenty of good Gen4 drives are sold bare. If you already have one, or can buy a bare drive for noticeably less than its heatsink version, this ICY BOX cooler is a simple fix. It is a solid aluminium cooler for the standard 2280 size, 10mm high and designed for the PS5’s slot, and the three thermal pads and fittings are in the box. Fitting it adds a few minutes to the install: apply the thermal pads, fit the heatsink to the drive, then screw the drive into the slot as normal. Check your drive is PCIe Gen4 and reads at 5,500 MB/s or faster before you start, as the heatsink cannot fix a drive that is too slow for the PS5.
