Independent Editorial Assessment

Our Verdict

This is the least fiddly way to add storage to a PS5. The 850P is SanDisk’s officially licensed PS5 drive, and it arrives with a heatsink shaped for the console’s M.2 slot already fitted, so there is no separate cooler to buy or thermal pad to line up. Sequential reads of up to 7,300 MB/s are comfortably above the 5,500 MB/s Sony recommends, games run straight from the drive, and SanDisk backs it with a five-year limited warranty. Installing it means taking a panel off the console and unscrewing the slot cover, which is a short job with a small Phillips screwdriver. The catch is cost: SSD prices have climbed steeply over the past year, so 1TB is a sizeable spend, and you pay a little extra for the licence compared with a generic drive that meets the same specification.

Key Features & Irish Specs

  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles
  • Heatsink designed specifically for the PS5 and PS5 Pro M.2 expansion slot
  • PCIe Gen 4.0 with sequential read speeds up to 7,300 MB/s
  • Play games directly from the drive; 5-year limited warranty

Is it right for you?

Great for

  • PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro owners who keep deleting games to make room
  • Anyone who wants a drive that is certain to fit and work first time
  • A Christmas upgrade for a console that is already full

Skip it if

  • You mostly want somewhere to park games you are not playing – a USB drive is cheaper per terabyte
  • You already own a bare Gen4 M.2 drive – a separate heatsink costs far less
