Our Verdict

A convector heats the air, which rises out of the top grille and pulls cooler air in at the bottom, so it warms a whole room faster than an oil-filled radiator but cools down faster once it switches off. The HSX2320 is De’Longhi’s slim freestanding version, only 9cm deep, so it sits against a wall or behind a sofa without taking over the floor. The three power settings matter for running costs: a lower setting can be enough to hold a room that is already warm, and you only need the full 2kW to bring a cold room up to temperature. A thermostat cycles it on and off once the room is warm, and the anti-frost setting switches it on if the temperature falls below 5°C, which is handy in a utility room, garage or holiday home. There is no timer, so you switch it on and off yourself; many heater manuals warn against plug-in timers anyway. De’Longhi pitches it for occasional use and spot heating, so for a room you sit in all day, every day, an oil-filled radiator gives steadier, quieter warmth. As with any convector, the grille and casing get hot in use, so keep it clear of curtains and out of reach of small children.

Is it right for you?

Great for

  • Living rooms, bedrooms and home offices that need warming up quickly
  • Rooms without much floor space, thanks to the 9cm depth
  • Utility rooms, garages and holiday homes that need frost protection

Skip it if
