Shaver, trimmer or OneBlade? Start with the beard you want
The first decision is the type of tool, not the brand. An electric shaver is for a clean-shaven face, every day or every few days. A beard trimmer keeps a beard at a set length, from heavy stubble to a full beard. The Philips OneBlade sits in between: it trims stubble, edges lines and shaves, but not as closely as a shaver and not for long beards. A multigroomer swaps heads on one handle to cover beard, short hair, nose and body. Buying the wrong type is an easy mistake to make, especially with gifts.
| If he… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shaves every day and wants a clean finish | Foil shaver (Braun Series 9 or Series 5) | Straight strokes, a close finish and crisp sideburns and necklines |
| Shaves every two or three days, or has sensitive skin | Rotary shaver (Philips Series 7000) | Round, flexing heads catch longer stubble with less tugging |
| Keeps designer stubble or a short beard | Philips OneBlade | One blade trims to a set length, edges and shaves the neck |
| Has a full beard of 5mm to 20mm | Beard trimmer (Philips Beard Trimmer 7000) | Fine length control and a wide blade for bulk trimming |
| Wants one gadget for beard, hair, nose and body | Multigroomer (Philips Multigroom 7000) | Swappable heads and combs on one rechargeable handle |
Every catalogue pick below was sold and dispatched by Amazon.ie when we checked, so there are no import charges at the door (here’s why that matters). After the picks come the practical points that catch people out: foil vs rotary, how these devices charge in an Irish bathroom, and the replacement parts you will need. Buying for someone else? Best electric shavers

Braun Series 9 PRO+ Wet & Dry Electric Foil Shaver with Charging Stand and Travel Case (9615s, Graphite)
Best for: Daily shavers with dense or coarse stubble, and premium gifts.
The Series 9 PRO+ is Braun’s top foil shaver, and the 9615s is the plainer version of it: a charging stand and travel case rather than the SmartCare cleaning station, so there are no cleaning cartridges to keep buying. Braun’s 5+1 synchronised shaving elements work across a 40° flexing head that reaches under the chin and along the neck, and Pro-SensoAdapt sensors read beard density 300 times a second and adjust shaving performance to suit. That is what you are paying for if you have dense, coarse stubble. It is fully waterproof for wet or dry use (cordless only when wet), Braun quotes up to 60 minutes per charge with a five-minute quick charge, and the warranty runs to five years with Braun Care+ registration.
Pros
- 5+1 shaving elements and beard-density sensing for a thorough pass on dense stubble
- Wet or dry, up to 60 minutes per charge with a 5-minute quick charge (Braun figures)
- Up to five years’ warranty with Braun Care+ registration
Cons
- Premium price, and Braun recommends a new foil and cutter head about every 18 months
- No automatic cleaning station in this set, so you rinse it yourself
- Braun’s charger usually has a 2-pin shaver plug rather than a 3-pin plug

Philips Shaver Series 7000 Wet & Dry Rotary Shaver with SkinIQ, Pop-up Trimmer, Charging Stand and Pouch (S7887/35)
Best for: Men who shave every few days, sensitive skin, and homes with no bathroom shaver socket.
Rotary shavers use three round heads that you move in small circles, and they generally handle two or three days’ growth, and hair that lies flat on the neck, better than foil shavers. The Series 7000 S7887 has 45 self-sharpening SteelPrecision blades cutting 90,000 times a minute, heads that flex 360 degrees, a micro-bead coating to reduce friction and Philips’ SkinIQ technology. It is fully waterproof, a one-hour charge gives up to 50 minutes, and a five-minute quick charge covers one shave. Philips rates the blades for two years, and SH71 heads replace them. The box lists a charging stand and a USB-A charging cable but no plug, so any USB-A phone charger will do. The listing’s RRP sits well above what it usually sells for, so judge a deal against recent prices, not the RRP.
Pros
- Round, flexing heads handle two or three days’ growth well
- Charges by USB-A, so no bathroom shaver socket is needed
- Self-sharpening blades rated for two years, plus a pop-up trimmer
Cons
- Edges and necklines are less crisp than with a foil shaver
- No USB plug in the box, and USB-C-only chargers need an adaptor
- The circular technique takes some getting used to after a razor

Braun Series 5 Wet & Dry Electric Foil Shaver with Body Groomer Attachment (52-B1600s, Blue)
Best for: First-time electric shavers who shave every day, and anyone who also trims body hair.
The Series 5 keeps Braun’s foil approach and German manufacturing at a mid-range price. Three flexible blades follow the face, there are two modes (Turbo for speed, Standard for a gentler shave), and this 52-B1600s set adds a Body Groomer attachment for chest and body hair. It is fully waterproof, and Braun quotes up to 50 minutes per charge with a five-minute quick charge for one shave. With fewer cutting elements than the Series 9 and no beard-density sensing listed, it is likely to need more passes on dense stubble, so it suits someone who shaves daily. It charges from Braun’s own power supply, which usually has a 2-pin shaver plug, and the listed box contents are a charger and cleaning brush, with no stand or case.
Pros
- Braun foil shaving and German build at a mid-range price
- Body Groomer attachment in the box
- Fully waterproof, up to 50 minutes per charge (Braun figure)
Cons
- Fewer cutting elements and no beard-density sensing listed, so dense beards may take more passes
- Charger usually has a 2-pin shaver plug
- No stand or travel case listed in this set

Best beard trimmers, OneBlades and grooming kits

Philips OneBlade 360 Face & Body Trimmer & Shaver – 3 Blades, 4 Stubble Combs (QP2834/31)
Best for: Designer stubble and short beards, stocking fillers and Kris Kindle.
Amazon.ie price as of 26 Oct 2026, 10:49. May have changed.
The OneBlade is a bit of both a trimmer and a shaver: a flexible 360 blade that trims to length with a comb on, edges with either side, and shaves without a comb. This QP2834 set has four click-on stubble combs (1, 2, 3 and 5mm), a body kit with a 3mm comb and skin guard, and three blades. Philips rates each blade at up to four months, so that should cover about a year of regular use. The shave is comfortable rather than razor-close. It charges from a USB-A cable, with no plug adaptor in the box.
Pros
- Trims, edges and shaves with one tool
- Three blades in the box, about a year of use (Philips rating)
- Four stubble combs plus a body kit
Cons
- Not as close as a foil or rotary shaver
- Blades are a running cost every few months
- No adjustable comb, stand or case
For an exact stubble length, the OneBlade Pro 360 uses the same blade with a 14-length precision comb from 0.4mm to 10mm, and adds a charging stand and travel case. The shave is the same; you pay for the adjustable comb and accessories, and there are two blades in the box rather than three.

Philips Beard Trimmer 7000 Series with 40 Length Settings, BeardSense and Hair Collector (BT7670/15)
Best for: Medium and long beards, and anyone keeping a beard at one exact length.
For a proper beard rather than stubble, the Beard Trimmer 7000 gives the most control here. A precision dial gives 40 lock-in length settings (Philips describes them as 0.2mm steps) across a short comb for 0.4–10mm and a long comb for 10.4–20mm, so it covers heavy stubble to a full beard and returns to the same length every time. BeardSense reads beard density 125 times a second and adds power where the beard is thickest, the self-sharpening metal blades need no oil, and the hair collector catches up to 80% of clippings by Philips’ figures. A click-on detail trimmer and a wide full-metal blade handle edging. Philips quotes up to 120 minutes per charge, it charges by USB-A with no adaptor in the box, and registering within 90 days adds three years to the two-year warranty.
Pros
- 40 lock-in length settings on a precision dial, up to 20mm
- Hair collector catches most clippings (up to 80%, Philips says)
- Up to 120 minutes per charge, and up to five years’ warranty with registration
Cons
- Trims only, so you still need a shaver, OneBlade or razor for a clean neck
- No USB plug adaptor in the box
- Two combs to swap between for short and long lengths

Philips Multigroom 7000 Series 17-Piece All-in-One Trimmer for Face, Head and Body (MG7961/15)
Best for: A first grooming kit, teenagers, and anyone who cuts their own hair short.
A multigroomer suits someone who wants one gadget for beard, a short haircut, nose and ears, and body hair. The 17-piece Multigroom 7000 gives 26 length settings from 0.5mm to 20mm, plus a precision comb with 11 settings from 1mm to 3mm in 0.2mm steps for even stubble. There is a narrow detail trimmer for lines, a nose trimmer and a body comb; the steel blades are self-sharpening with no oil needed, and BeardSense adds power in dense patches. Philips quotes up to 120 minutes per charge with a battery indicator, and it charges by USB-A (no adaptor included). It trims rather than shaves, and 20mm is the longest setting, so it will not replace a barber’s clipper for longer haircuts.
Pros
- Beard, short haircuts, nose and body from one handle
- 26 length settings plus a fine 1–3mm stubble comb
- Self-sharpening blades, no oiling, up to 120 minutes per charge
Cons
- Trims only, no close shave
- Lots of attachments to store and keep track of
- No USB adaptor in the box

Foil vs rotary: which suits your skin and beard?
Foil shavers (Braun, Panasonic and Remington’s F range) have oscillating blades behind a thin, perforated metal foil, used in straight strokes. They tend to give the closest daily shave and the neatest sideburns and necklines, but the foil is thin: a drop onto a tiled floor can dent it. Rotary shavers (Philips, and Remington’s R range) have three round heads that flex independently, used in small circles. They usually cope better with two or three days’ growth and with hairs that grow flat or in different directions on the neck, and many people with sensitive skin find them gentler. Edges are less precise, which is why most include a pop-up trimmer.
- Wet or dry. Shaving with gel or foam in the shower can feel gentler; dry shaving is quicker. All three shavers in our picks can be used wet, but only cordless: never use a shaver plugged in near water.
- Give it a few weeks. Skin and beard usually take a few weeks to adjust when you switch from a razor or from another type of shaver, so don’t judge a new one on the first few days.
- Daily or every few days. Daily and smooth: foil. Every two or three days: rotary. Stubble most of the time: a OneBlade or trimmer will get more use than either.
Charging: 2-pin shaver plugs, USB and Irish bathrooms
Mains appliances we list come with Irish/UK 3-pin plugs, but shavers are a separate case. Braun shavers sold here usually charge from Braun’s own power supply with a 2-pin plug made for a bathroom shaver socket, the kind often built into a mirror light or bathroom cabinet in Irish homes. To charge one from a normal socket, you need a fused UK 3-pin shaver adaptor, which is inexpensive and worth adding to the basket if there is no shaver socket; a loose-fitting travel adaptor is not a good substitute.
The Philips Series 7000 shaver, OneBlade 360, Beard Trimmer 7000 and Multigroom 7000 on this page all charge from a USB-A cable with no plug in the box, so any USB-A phone charger works. Many newer phones come with USB-C chargers only, so if there is nothing with a USB-A port in the house, add a small USB-A plug. Our power banks and chargers guide covers good options, and electric toothbrush chargers usually have the same 2-pin plug as Braun shavers (see our electric toothbrush guide).
Replacement heads and blades: the running cost to budget for
Shaver heads and OneBlade blades wear out, and a worn head pulls rather than cuts, which is often when people decide a shaver has “gone off”. Before you commit, check that replacement parts for your model are easy to buy on Amazon.ie, especially for a gift. Over a few years, a shaver needs a new head every 18 months to two years on the makers’ guidance, while a OneBlade used regularly needs about three blades a year, so it is the more frequent purchase if you would use it as a daily shaver.
| Tool | What wears out | How often (maker’s guidance) | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Braun foil shavers (Series 9, 7, 5) | Foil and cutter cassette | About every 18 months | Heads are series-specific: Amazon.ie lists the 96M for the Series 9 PRO+ and the 54B for recent Series 5 models, but check the code in your manual |
| Philips rotary (Series 7000) | Set of three shaving heads (SH71) | Blades rated for two years | Replace all three heads together |
| Philips OneBlade | 360 blade | Up to four months per blade | Multi-packs usually work out cheaper per blade |
| Philips beard trimmers and multigroomers | Self-sharpening blades | No routine replacement or oiling, per Philips | Brush out clippings after each use |
What to check before you buy
- Match the tool to the beard. Clean-shaven every day: a foil shaver. Every few days: a rotary. Stubble: a OneBlade. A full beard: a trimmer.
- Check where it will charge. No shaver socket in the bathroom? A USB-charged Philips is simplest, or budget for a fused 3-pin shaver adaptor with a Braun.
- Look at the box contents. Stands, travel cases, cleaning stations and combs vary between sets of the same shaver, and the model suffix (for example 9615s) tells you which set you are getting.
- Treat RRPs with caution. Some shaver listings show an RRP far above the usual selling price. Compare against recent prices, especially around Black Friday, when shavers and trimmers are often reduced.
- Register the warranty. On the Series 9 PRO+, Braun Care+ registration takes the warranty to up to five years, and Philips adds three years to the Beard Trimmer 7000’s two if you register within 90 days. Check the terms for your model.
- Look after it. Rinse waterproof models after use and let them dry with the cap off, don’t press hard (it wears foils and irritates skin), and replace a dented or torn foil straight away.

Buying a shaver or trimmer as a gift
A shaver or trimmer is a classic Christmas gift, but it only works if it matches how he grooms. If you are not sure, a OneBlade 360 is the safest small gift because it trims and shaves, and the Multigroom 7000 covers almost any routine. Save a premium shaver like the Series 9 for someone you know shaves every day. Order in good time for Christmas: popular sets can sell out on Amazon.ie in December, leaving only offers shipped from the UK or third-party sellers. For more ideas, see our gifts for him, Kris Kindle and Christmas gift guides.
