Dryer, hot brush or multi-styler?
Hair tools fall into three groups, and picking the right group matters more than picking the brand. A conventional dryer (around 2,000–2,400W) uses heat and a strong fan to get hair dry quickly, and with a nozzle, a round brush and some practice it does everything. A high-velocity dryer, such as the Dyson Supersonic or Shark SpeedStyle, uses a fast motor to push air harder at lower temperatures, so it dries quickly with less heat and is usually lighter to hold. A hot-air brush or multi-styler dries and styles at once: a one-step brush like the Revlon gives a smooth blow-dry, while multi-stylers like the Shark Glam, Shark FlexStyle and Dyson Airwrap add curling barrels and smoothing tools.
Below are five picks, all sold and dispatched by Amazon.ie in the UK/Irish 3-pin version, a list of other models worth searching for, and a note on why Dyson is not among our picks right now. Then come a comparison table, advice by hair type, and the buying points that make a difference day to day. Hair tools are also a popular Christmas gift, so there is a short gifting section at the end.
Why the plug matters: EU-plug stylers and imports
Premium stylers are an easy place to end up with the wrong plug. When we checked Amazon.ie in October 2026, the Shark FlexStyle was only offered by marketplace sellers, including an EU-plug version (model code HD446SLEU) with a delivery charge, and the Dyson Airwrap was not sold by Amazon.ie itself. Prices on those listings can look tempting, but an EU two-pin styler means living with an adaptor on a high-wattage appliance you may use every day for years.
- Read the model code. Shark models for the UK and Ireland have UK in the model code (HD752UK, HD6051SUKPK); EU versions have EU (such as HD446SLEU). BaByliss UK/Ireland models typically end in U (such as 5240U), and Revlon’s include UK (RVDR5222UK).
- Avoid adaptors for heavy, daily use. Cheap travel adaptors are not designed for hours of high-wattage use and can overheat or sit loosely in the socket. A styler with the right plug fitted is simpler and safer.
- Check the warranty region. Shark’s listing for the UK model says its two-year warranty applies in the UK and Ireland on registration. An EU-market unit from a marketplace seller may have to go back through that seller instead.
- Watch for customs charges. Items shipped from a UK seller can carry import VAT and handling fees on arrival; Amazon.ie’s own stock ships from within the EU. See our customs charges explainer and how to find Amazon.ie stock.

Our picks

Shark SpeedStyle Pro High-Velocity Hair Dryer with Scalp Shield, 5 Attachments & Storage Bag (HD752UK, Black)
Best for: Daily drying of long, thick, wavy or curly hair.
The SpeedStyle Pro takes the same high-velocity approach as the Dyson Supersonic, and Amazon.ie sells it itself. It dries with fast airflow rather than very high heat, and it recognises which attachment is fitted and sets the temperature and airflow to suit. The HD752UK bundle has five: a DefrizzFast Diffuser for curls and waves, a QuickSmooth Brush for smoothing while you dry, a FrizzFighter tool for flyaways, a Turbo Concentrator and a touch-up brush. Scalp Shield lowers the temperature for drying at the roots, and the listing states a UK plug and a two-year Shark warranty on registration. Amazon.ie also sells SpeedStyle Pro bundles with fewer attachments, so check the model code before you buy.
Pros
- Attachments set their own heat and airflow
- A real diffuser for curls and waves in the box
- Scalp Shield mode for gentler drying at the roots
- UK plug and a two-year warranty on registration
Cons
- Several times the price of a good conventional dryer
- Several similar-looking bundles, so check you are getting the five-attachment HD752UK

Shark Glam Ceramic & Air 5-in-1 Multi-Styler and Dryer with FrizzFighter & Storage Case (HD6051SUKPK, Pink)
Best for: Mid-length to long hair, and anyone who styles most days.
If the person you are buying for wants an Airwrap, this is the multi-styler Amazon.ie sells itself with a UK/Irish plug. It mixes airflow with heat-controlled ceramic plates: the Silki Tool smooths and straightens on wet or dry hair, the Glossi brush gives a bouncy blow-dry, the Coanda Auto-Wrap Curlers wind hair around the barrel for curls and waves, the FrizzFighter tool calms flyaways (handy in Irish drizzle), and a concentrator handles plain drying. Shark says it never exceeds 150°C, and it comes with a storage case. Auto-wrap curlers need enough length to wrap, so it suits mid-length and long hair.
Pros
- Dries, smooths, straightens and curls with one tool
- Styles without going above 150°C, according to Shark
- Storage case and two-year warranty on registration
Cons
- Expensive, and the full kit takes up a drawer
- Less useful on short hair
- Overkill if you only ever blow-dry

BaByliss Super Power 2400W Ionic Hair Dryer with AC Motor, 3 Heat & 2 Speed Settings (5240U, Black)
Best for: Thick or long hair, and households sharing one dryer.
A no-nonsense, powerful dryer for people with a lot of hair. The AC motor is the type salon dryers use, giving strong, steady airflow, and at 2,400W it is at the top of the usual range for home dryers. It has three heat and two speed settings, a cold shot and ionic frizz control, and the 2.5m cord reaches a mirror from a bedroom socket. BaByliss gives it a five-year warranty. The trade-off is weight: AC motors are heavier, and owner feedback often mentions it. There is a concentrator but no diffuser in the box.
Pros
- 2,400W AC motor for fast drying
- Long 2.5m cord and a hanging loop
- Five-year warranty
Cons
- Heavier than high-velocity and compact dryers
- No diffuser included

Revlon Salon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumiser for Mid to Long Hair, with Sectioning Comb (RVDR5222UK, Black)
Best for: Smooth, voluminous blow-dries on mid-length to long hair; a good teen or student gift.
The hot-air brush that started the trend. You use it like a round brush, rolling each section from roots to ends, and it dries and smooths at once, giving a bouncy, salon-style finish with far less practice than a dryer and brush. Revlon says the ionic technology cuts frizz and static, and the barrel is ceramic-coated for even heat. It has three heat and two speed settings, a cool tip and a 2m swivel cord. This one is designed for mid-length to long hair, so on a short cut a smaller brush or a dryer with a concentrator is easier to handle. It smooths rather than defines, so it is the wrong tool for keeping natural curls.
Pros
- Dries and styles in one step
- Easy to learn compared with a round brush
- Sectioning comb and 2m swivel cord included
Cons
- Slow on very thick hair unless you rough-dry first
- Bulky to pack, and not for defining curls

Wahl Travel Hair Dryer – Compact Folding 1000W Dryer with Dual Voltage, Diffuser & Concentrator (Black)
Best for: Weekends away, gym bags, student rooms and short or fine hair.
A light, folding dryer that Wahl says weighs 280g, with a concentrator and a diffuser in the box. A dual voltage switch means it can also be used in lower-voltage countries such as the US and Canada. It has a UK/Irish 3-pin plug, so abroad you still need a plug adaptor, and you must switch it back to the high-voltage setting at home, as Wahl warns the wrong setting will damage it. At 1,000W it is a backup or holiday dryer: long, thick hair takes a good while longer than with a full-size model.
Pros
- Folds flat and weighs very little
- Dual voltage for trips to the US and Canada
- Diffuser and concentrator included
Cons
- Much less powerful than a full-size dryer
- Shorter 1.8m cable

What about the Dyson Supersonic and Airwrap?
The Supersonic is still the dryer others are measured against: Dyson puts the motor in the handle so it feels balanced rather than top-heavy, and says its sensors measure the air temperature 40 times a second to avoid extreme heat. The problem is buying one on Amazon.ie. When we checked on 26 October 2026, the Supersonic listing that Amazon.ie sells itself used the German word for hair dryer in its title, was priced far above Dyson’s own Irish price, and had a delivery date more than a week away. Its details listed only a concentrator and a user manual, and the other offers on the page came from marketplace sellers with a delivery charge. The Airwrap was not sold by Amazon.ie at all.
That is not a listing we are comfortable sending you to, so Dyson is not among our picks for now. If your heart is set on one, buy it from Dyson’s Irish website or a major Irish retailer, where you get the Irish plug and Dyson’s own warranty. From Amazon.ie stock, the Shark SpeedStyle Pro is the closest high-velocity dryer and the Shark Glam the closest multi-styler to an Airwrap.

Which suits your hair type?
- Fine or thin hair. You do not need maximum power. Low to medium heat with a concentrator, or a one-step brush like the Revlon for volume, works well. Avoid blasting fine hair on the highest heat setting.
- Thick or long hair. Drying time is the problem, so airflow matters most: a 2,200–2,400W conventional dryer like the BaByliss Super Power or a high-velocity dryer. Rough-dry to about 80% before styling with a brush or multi-styler.
- Curly and wavy hair. A diffuser spreads the airflow so curls dry without being blown apart. Use low speed and medium heat, and do not touch the hair while it dries. The Shark SpeedStyle Pro and Wahl Travel include one, and the BaByliss Turbo Smooth in our search list comes with a large diffuser.
- Coily and Afro-textured hair. Look for a diffuser or comb attachment, low-heat settings and a cool shot. The Wahl Powerpik 2 in our search list is designed for this hair type.
- Short hair. Auto-wrap curlers and large-barrel brushes need length. A small dryer with a concentrator, or a smaller-barrel brush, suits short cuts better than a full multi-styler.
- Colour-treated or damaged hair. Prioritise temperature control: Philips’s ThermoShield, Dyson’s heat sensing and Shark’s 150°C limit on the Glam are all designed to avoid extreme heat. Use a heat protectant whatever you buy.
What to look for when buying
- Wattage is only part of the story. For conventional dryers, 2,000–2,400W suits most people and 1,000–1,200W is travel territory. High-velocity dryers use fast motors at lower wattage, so do not compare a Shark or Dyson with a budget dryer on watts alone.
- Ionic and ceramic claims. Ionic dryers release negative ions that manufacturers say reduce static and frizz, and ceramic or tourmaline coatings aim to spread heat evenly. Most mid-range dryers now include them, so you rarely pay much extra, but they will not repair damaged hair.
- Attachments you will use. A slim concentrator is essential for smooth styles; a diffuser matters for curls. Multi-styler kits look impressive, but count the attachments you would use every week.
- Weight and balance. If you dry long hair daily, a lighter or better-balanced dryer is easier on the arm. AC-motor dryers are durable but heavier.
- Cord length. Most Irish bathrooms have only a two-pin shaver socket, which is not designed to power a hair dryer, so most people dry their hair in the bedroom. A 2–2.5m cord helps you reach a mirror; never use an extension lead to bring a dryer into the bathroom.
- Cool shot and filter. A cool shot button sets the style once hair is dry. A removable rear filter makes it easier to clear fluff, which helps the dryer last.
- Plug, seller and warranty. Choose the UK/Irish 3-pin version sold by Amazon.ie, and register the product with the manufacturer if that activates the warranty (Shark’s two-year warranty requires registration). Here is why we only list Amazon.ie stock.
Running costs are small whichever you choose. A 2,400W dryer on full heat for 10 minutes uses at most 0.4kWh, roughly 13c at an electricity price of around 32c per kWh, and less in practice because few people use maximum heat the whole time. Drying speed, comfort and hair health matter far more than the electricity bill here.
Buying a dryer or styler as a gift
Hair tools are a popular Christmas gift, especially premium stylers. A few things make the gift go smoothly. Buy the type the person actually wants: someone who has asked for an Airwrap may not want a dryer, however good. Premium brands are rarely discounted heavily, so treat a very large reduction on a Dyson or Shark styler with suspicion and check the seller (our Black Friday guide explains how). Keep the box sealed until you are sure it is right, because personal-care items can be harder to return once opened, and check the return-by date in Your Orders.
For more ideas, see our Christmas gift guide, gifts for her and, for a smaller budget, our Kris Kindle gift ideas; the Wahl Travel and Revlon One-Step both suit modest budgets. For other grooming kit, read our guides to electric toothbrushes and beard trimmers and shavers, browse all beauty and grooming guides, or shop the Health & Personal Care category.
Keeping a dryer or styler in good shape
- Clean the rear filter every few weeks. A clogged filter makes the motor work harder and can trigger the overheat cut-out.
- Let the dryer cool before putting it away, and do not wrap the cord tightly around the handle; that strains the cable where it enters the body.
- Wipe attachments and brush heads regularly, and pull trapped hair out of hot-brush bristles.
- If a dryer cuts out, smells of burning or sparks, unplug it, let it cool and stop using it until you have contacted the manufacturer.
