How to use this guide

Find the age band, then match an idea to what the child is into right now, and always check the age printed on the box. Age labels on toys are about safety as well as ability. A set marked 3+ may have parts a toddler could choke on, however advanced the toddler.

Our catalogue doesn’t include toys, so the ideas for younger children are Amazon.ie search links filtered to Amazon-dispatched stock. We’ve named well-known brands and ranges; check the seller, age label and price on the listing itself. For teenagers we include tech from our catalogue. For adults, see our gifts for him, gifts for her and Christmas gifts by budget guides.

Toy safety: what to check before you buy

  • CE mark. Look for it on the toy or the packaging. The CCPC advises not buying a toy without one, and the HSE recommends buying toys with the CE mark from trusted shops. A mark that looks wrong may be fake, and you can report it to the CCPC.
  • Age warnings. A round symbol showing a crossed-out child’s face and "0–3" means the toy is not suitable for children under 36 months, usually because of small parts. It should come with a note of the hazard, such as "small parts".
  • Small parts and siblings. The HSE warns that older children may share unsuitable toys with younger ones. Keep LEGO, die-cast cars and board-game pieces away from crawling babies.
  • Batteries. Battery compartments should be screwed shut, so a child can’t open them. Keep spare button batteries and remote controls out of reach.
  • Magnets and balloons. Swallowed magnets can be harmful, so check for loose ones. The HSE says balloons are not toys: only adults should blow them up, and children should be supervised with them.
  • Buying online. EU product safety rules that have applied since December 2024 require online listings to show the manufacturer’s details and any warnings. Be wary of unbranded toys from unknown sellers with neither.

Babies and toddlers (0–2)

At this age, simple is better. Look for chunky toys that are easy to grip and wipe clean, with no small or detachable parts, and toys that respond when they’re pushed, stacked or squeezed. Board books survive being chewed. Anything with the 0–3 warning symbol is not for this age group, whatever the picture on the box suggests.

Pre-schoolers (3–5)

Pre-schoolers are into pretend play, making things and hearing the same story for the hundredth time. Gifts that let them do things on their own, like a story player they can work themselves or a set of play food for a pretend shop, tend to last longer than toys that do everything for them.

Ages 6–8

This is when proper building sets and family games start to work: children can follow LEGO instructions on their own and play short card and board games to the end. Choose LEGO by theme rather than set number, as sets change every year. A game the whole family will play on St Stephen’s Day is often the best gift of all.

Ages 9–12

Older children want gifts that feel less like toys: more complex builds, strategy games they can beat adults at, and games to play with friends. Many get their first headphones or tablet at this age, so see the section on volume limits and parental controls below. A keen reader may also be ready for a Kindle (see the teen picks).

Teenagers (13 and up)

Teenagers are the hardest group to surprise, and the safest approach is to upgrade something they already use every day. These four products are from our catalogue and sold and dispatched by Amazon.ie. Ask before buying anything tied to a phone or a game library: an iPhone accessory is wasted on an Android user.

Kindle Paperwhite (2024 model) 16GB – 7" Glare-Free Display with Adjustable Warm Light (With Ads, Black)

A good way to keep a teenager reading without handing over another device full of distractions. The Kindle does one job: there are no social apps or games competing for attention. The 300 ppi screen is comfortable for long sessions, the warm light suits reading in bed, and IPX8 waterproofing means a leaking water bottle in a school bag won’t end it.

Pros

  • No social media or games to distract
  • Built-in parental controls
  • Survives spills and the odd bath

Cons

  • Can’t borrow BorrowBox library ebooks, which Irish libraries use
Apple AirPods Pro 3 Wireless Earbuds – Active Noise Cancellation, Heart Rate Sensing & MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C)

If they have an iPhone, these are the earbuds most likely to be on their list. Noise cancelling quietens a noisy school bus, and transparency mode lets them hear traffic and announcements without taking an earbud out. The AirPods Pro 3 come with five ear-tip sizes, including an extra-small XXS that helps smaller ears get a good seal. Parents can cap headphone volume on the iPhone with Reduce Loud Audio in the Headphone Safety settings, and lock it with Screen Time.

Pros

  • Transparency mode for walking and cycling
  • Volume can be capped from the iPhone
  • IP57 sweat and water resistance for PE and wet walks

Cons

  • Small and easy to lose, and much less useful with an Android phone
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max – Streaming Device with Ambient Experience & Wi-Fi 6E
For the bedroom or games-room TV

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max – Streaming Device with Ambient Experience & Wi-Fi 6E

Best for: Teens with a TV of their own, students moving out

Turns a spare or older TV into one with Netflix, RTÉ Player, YouTube and Prime Video. Setup takes a few minutes, and Fire TV’s parental controls can require a PIN for purchases, for opening apps and for Prime Video content above a chosen rating. It moves easily to a student flat later, as it fits in a pocket.

Pros

  • PIN-protected purchases and content
  • Major and Irish streaming apps
  • Easy to move between TVs

Cons

  • Every streaming service still needs its own subscription
Lenovo Legion Go Handheld Gaming Console – 8.8" 144Hz 2K Display, AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 512GB SSD
For the serious gamer

Lenovo Legion Go Handheld Gaming Console – 8.8" 144Hz 2K Display, AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 512GB SSD

Best for: Older teens with a Steam or Game Pass library

The big-ticket option for a teenager who already plays on a PC. It runs Windows 11, so their existing Steam and Game Pass games come with them, on an 8.8-inch screen that is much larger than a Switch. Set it up with a child account in Microsoft Family Safety for screen-time limits, content filters and spending controls before you wrap it.

Pros

  • Plays an existing PC game library
  • Large, sharp screen
  • Detachable controllers

Cons

  • An expensive gift, and the battery drains quickly in demanding games
  • Windows needs more setting up and updating than a console

Headphones, game ratings and parental controls

Headphones. For younger children, choose headphones designed with a volume limit. Many kids’ models are capped at 85 dB, and some apps let parents set a lower limit. Check that the headband adjusts small enough for the child’s head.

Game ratings. Games sold in Ireland carry PEGI age labels, explained in the FAQ below. Check the label and the content icons on the box, especially for games a child has heard about from older friends.

  • Nintendo Switch: the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app sets play-time limits, restricts games by rating and limits spending.
  • Windows handhelds and PCs: Microsoft Family Safety handles screen time, content filters and purchases.
  • Fire TV and Kindle: both have built-in parental controls with a PIN or password.
  • Before wrapping: charge devices, install updates and set up accounts and controls, so Christmas morning isn’t spent on downloads.

Frequently asked questions

What age is LEGO Duplo suitable for?

Most LEGO Duplo sets are labelled from 18 months or 2 years, and the bricks are twice the size of standard LEGO, which makes them easier for small hands. Children usually move on to standard LEGO sets, many of which carry a 4+ or older label, around pre-school age. Duplo bricks connect with standard LEGO bricks, so they stay useful.

What does the 0–3 symbol on a toy mean?

The round symbol with a crossed-out child’s face and "0–3" means the toy is not suitable for children under 36 months, usually because it contains small parts that could cause choking. Under EU toy safety rules it should be accompanied by a short note of the specific hazard. Keep these toys away from babies and toddlers, including older siblings’ sets.

Do kids really need volume-limited headphones?

They are a sensible choice for younger children, who are less likely to notice when the volume is too high. Many kids’ headphones cap output at 85 dB. For older children with their own phones, you can also limit headphone volume in the phone’s settings, such as Reduce Loud Audio on an iPhone.

What do PEGI ratings on games mean?

PEGI is the age-rating system used on games sold in Ireland. The number (3, 7, 12, 16 or 18) is the minimum age the content suits, not a measure of difficulty, and icons on the box flag content such as violence, bad language or in-game purchases. Console parental controls can block games above a chosen PEGI level.
