How to choose a LEGO set
Start with the age on the box, then pick a theme the child is into right now, and only then think about size. The age label is LEGO’s guide to how hard the build is, and for the youngest it is also a safety label: standard LEGO has small parts that are a choking risk for under-threes, so a 4+ set is not for a toddler however advanced they are. At the other end, 18+ marks sets LEGO designed for adult builders, usually display models. It reflects the complexity and subject, not a hazard, so a patient teenager who has built big Technic sets will usually manage one.
Piece count is a rough guide to build time, not value. A 275-piece Speed Champions car is an evening; an 800-piece Technic car takes several sessions. Creator 3in1 sets give three models from one box, which is why they punch above their price. This guide is organised by age band, with a budget table and a comparison table further down. For non-LEGO ideas, see our kids’ gifts by age guide; for the grown-ups on your list, the Christmas gift guide by budget.
Why buy LEGO from Amazon.ie stock
LEGO is sold by lots of sellers on Amazon, and the same set can appear from a seller in Great Britain at what looks like a lower price. Since Brexit, a parcel from Britain is an import, and that is a poor way to buy a Christmas present:
- Import VAT at 23% is due on every parcel from outside the EU, whatever its value, and from 1 July 2026 most parcels worth €150 or less also carry a fixed €3 customs charge per distinct item. LEGO is made in factories in Europe, Mexico and Asia, not the UK, so customs duty can apply on bigger orders above €150 too. Our customs charges explainer has the detail.
- The bill can land on the recipient. If a UK seller does not collect the charges at checkout, the carrier asks for them, plus an administration fee, before it hands over the parcel. Sending a set straight to a niece in Galway could leave her parents paying to receive your present.
- Delays at the worst time. Parcels held for customs payment take longer, and December is when couriers are busiest.
- Swaps cost more. Import VAT and handling fees are generally not refunded if a duplicate set goes back after Christmas.
Every set we pick below was sold and dispatched by Amazon.ie when we checked, and the search links are filtered to Amazon.ie stock, so the price includes Irish VAT, there is nothing to pay at the door, and you have EU consumer rights if something is missing or faulty. Here is more on why we only list Amazon.ie stock.

Ages 4 to 5: first proper LEGO
Four and five-year-olds can manage standard LEGO bricks, but long instruction booklets are hard going. A big box of mixed bricks, or a small 4+ or 5+ set that is built in one sitting, works better than a large themed set they cannot finish without an adult. If there is a baby in the house, plan where the bricks will live.

LEGO Classic Large Creative Brick Box – 790 Pieces in 33 Colours with 2 Green Baseplates, Ages 4+ (10698)
Best for: A first LEGO for ages 4 to 6, or a shared family collection
A tub of 790 bricks in 33 colours, with the windows, doors, wheels and eyes that make a pile of bricks into houses, cars and creatures, plus two green baseplates. Idea sheets suggest a digger, a moped, a castle and more, but nothing has to be built "properly", so a younger child is never stuck on page 30. The brick-shaped box is also the storage, and it becomes the base collection that later themed sets add to.
Pros
- 790 pieces in 33 colours, with two baseplates
- Storage box included
- Open-ended, so it suits a range of ages and siblings sharing
Cons
- No single model to finish, which disappoints some children who want "the fire engine on the box"
- Small parts: keep it away from under-threes

Ages 6 to 8: City, Creator and first booklets
This is the age when most children start following a full booklet on their own. LEGO City vehicles and buildings with minifigures are the classic choice for role play, while small Creator 3in1 sets suit children who like to build, take apart and build again.

LEGO City Emergency Air Ambulance Plane with Snow Scooter, Stretcher and Minifigures, Ages 6+ (60465)
Best for: Children of 6 to 8 who love rescue and emergency play
A 403-piece City air ambulance that keeps going after the build is done: the boarding stairs fold down and the fuselage opens to a cockpit, medical screens, a workstation and a fold-out lab. A snow scooter, stretcher, medical bag and small airport scene with a windsock fill out the story, and the minifigures include a pilot and a doctor. It sits in the middle of the City price range, which makes it a sensible main present.
Pros
- Lots of play inside the model, not just on the outside
- Snow scooter and airport scene add extra builds
- Fits in with any City sets they already have
Cons
- More of a toy than a display model
- A big plane needs floor or shelf space once built

LEGO Technic Monster Jam Sparkle Smash (42220)
A 7+ pull-back monster truck and a gentle first taste of Technic.
Ages 9 to 12: bigger builds and Technic
From nine, children can take on builds of 500 pieces or more over several sittings, and many move into Technic, which uses beams, pins and gears to make working mechanisms. Licensed themes such as Harry Potter, Minecraft and Star Wars are hugely popular at this age. The sets in those themes change every year, so start from the theme the child loves, then check the age label and piece count on each listing.

LEGO Creator 3in1 T. rex – Rebuilds into a Triceratops or Pterodactyl, 626 Pieces, Ages 9+ (31151)
Best for: Dinosaur fans who enjoy building as much as playing
One of the larger Creator 3in1 sets: 626 pieces that build a T. rex with a movable head, jaw, tail, arms and legs, or a Triceratops or a Pterodactyl instead. That is three substantial builds from one present, and dinosaurs appeal across the whole age band. The catch is that only one model can be built at a time.
Pros
- Three models from one box
- Poseable T. rex with a movable jaw, tail and limbs
- Good value per build compared with single-model sets
Cons
- Only one dinosaur can be built at a time
- A keen seven or eight-year-old will probably need an adult for parts of it

LEGO Technic Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut Super Sports Car in Grey, 801 Pieces (42173)
Best for: Car-mad 10 to 12-year-olds and teenagers
An 801-piece Technic hypercar that teaches how a car works as it goes together: builders assemble the V8 engine and differential, then check the steering. The dihedral doors swing out and rotate 90 degrees as on the real car. Amazon.ie lists it for ages 10 and up, it costs a fraction of the big 1:8 Technic supercars, and it looks the part on a shelf afterwards.
Pros
- Real mechanisms: engine, differential and working steering
- Eye-catching dihedral doors
- Digital instructions in the LEGO Builder app
Cons
- Pin-heavy Technic building can frustrate a child used to City sets
- No motor or remote control

Teenagers: Speed Champions, Technic and Star Wars
Teenagers often drift away from LEGO and then come back to it through cars, films or F1. Detailed models they can build in an evening and keep on a shelf work better than playsets. The Koenigsegg above suits teenagers well, and the adult sets further down are fine for a patient older teen.

LEGO Speed Champions Ferrari SF-24 F1 Race Car with Driver Minifigure, 275 Pieces, Ages 10+ (77242)
Best for: F1 fans from 10 up, including adults; Kris Kindle and stockings
A 275-piece model of Ferrari’s 2024 F1 car from LEGO’s 2025 range of team cars, with a rear wing, halo bar, Pirelli-printed rear tyres and a driver minifigure in Ferrari kit. It is a one-evening build that looks good on a desk, and the other teams’ cars are sold separately, so it is easy to add to for birthdays.
Pros
- Inexpensive and quick to build
- Driver minifigure included
- Collectable alongside the other F1 team cars
Cons
- Most of the livery is stickers, which need a steady hand
- It is the 2024 car, not this season’s

Adults: LEGO Botanicals and Icons
Adult LEGO is now one of the easiest Christmas gifts for someone who has everything. Botanicals (brick-built flowers and plants) suit people who have never built LEGO and want something for the hall table. Icons covers display models of cars, buildings and film and space subjects for fans who want a longer project for the quiet days after Christmas.

LEGO Botanicals Wildflower Bouquet – Artificial Flowers with Poppies and Lavender, 939 Pieces (10313)
Best for: Mothers, grandmothers, partners and anyone who likes flowers
One of the larger Botanicals bouquets at 939 pieces: 16 stems of eight kinds of flower, including Welsh poppies, lavender, cornflowers and lupins, with stem heights you can adjust as you arrange them in your own vase. The build is relaxing rather than tricky and splits easily across a few evenings, and the result never wilts. There is no vase in the box, so check they have one or add one to the present.
Pros
- No LEGO experience needed
- A large, colourful arrangement
- A calm, screen-free project
Cons
- Vase not included
- Keep it out of strong direct sunlight, which can fade bricks over time

LEGO Botanicals Bonsai Tree – Display Set with Green Leaves or Pink Cherry Blossoms, 878 Pieces (10281)
Best for: Office desks, apartments and Kris Kindle at the top of the budget
An 878-piece bonsai in a rectangular brick-built pot on a stand styled like wooden slats, with two sets of foliage, green leaves or pink cherry blossoms (made from tiny pink frog pieces), so the display can change with the seasons. It is complete in the box, needs no vase and suits a desk or a small apartment. Building all those leaves is repetitive in places.
Pros
- Pot and stand included
- Two looks: green leaves or pink blossoms
- Compact enough for a desk
Cons
- Repetitive in places
- Swapping the foliage means rebuilding that section

LEGO Icons McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna F1 Model Set for Adults, 693 Pieces (10330)
Best for: Motorsport fans, and a desk display for the office
The car Ayrton Senna drove to his first world title, as a 693-piece display model with working steering, push-rod suspension, an adjustable rear wing and a detailed V6 turbo engine. A stand lists the car’s statistics, and a Senna minifigure stands on a podium with a photo and a quote. A good size for a desk or shelf, and a couple of evenings of building.
Pros
- Detailed mechanicals for a mid-sized set
- Display stand and Senna minifigure included
- A sensible first Icons set
Cons
- A display piece, not a toy
- Fans of the current grid may prefer a modern car

Buying tips and common mistakes
- Check the set number, not just the name. LEGO reuses names such as "Fire Station" across years. The five-digit number on the box is how you make sure you are buying the set on the wish list.
- Respect the age label for small children. Anything 4+ has small parts. If there are toddlers in the house, agree a LEGO table or room. Our kids’ gifts by age guide covers toy-safety checks such as the CE mark.
- Watch for knock-offs. Unbranded "building block" sets that copy LEGO models appear from unknown sellers. They are not LEGO, and the bricks may not fit well. Buying from Amazon.ie stock avoids the guesswork.
- Stickers or printed parts. Many sets, including most Speed Champions, rely on stickers. Younger builders may want a hand lining them up.
- Keep the box sealed until Christmas Day if there is any chance of a swap. An unopened box is the simplest thing to return.
- Sets retire. LEGO withdraws sets regularly, and popular ones can sell out before Christmas. If a set is on the list and in Amazon.ie stock, don’t leave it to the last week.
- Think about where it goes. Display sets like the McLaren or the Bonsai need a shelf; big playsets need floor space and storage.
Black Friday, delivery and returns
Black Friday. LEGO is regularly discounted around Black Friday (27 November 2026). If a set you want is reduced and still sold by Amazon.ie, that week is a sensible time to buy. Our Black Friday 2026 guide explains how to spot a genuine reduction.
Delivery. Amazon.ie publishes its Christmas last order dates in December. Treat them as the deadline, not the target, especially for rural addresses and the islands. Prime delivery from Amazon.ie stock is usually quick in most of the country, but the final fortnight before Christmas is the busiest time for couriers.
Returns. You usually have a 14-day cooling-off period for goods bought online, starting when the parcel arrives. Amazon has extended its returns window over the holidays in previous years, but we haven’t confirmed the 2026 terms, so check the return-by date in Your Orders. Our Amazon.ie returns guide has the details.
