If a four- or five-year-old is getting their first proper LEGO, a big tub of mixed bricks often gets more use than a single themed set. This Classic box has 790 pieces in 33 colours, with the windows, doors, wheels and eyes that turn a pile of bricks into a house, a car or a creature, plus two green baseplates to build on. Idea sheets in the box suggest models such as a digger, a moped and a castle, but nothing has to be built "properly", so younger children are not frustrated by a long instruction booklet. The box itself is the storage, which matters in a house where bricks end up under the couch. It is also a good base collection that later themed sets add to.
